Fall is finally here, which means it is apple season! I love it when the apples from north Georgia start showing up my neighborhood farmers market. When I was growing up, my grandmother would go to Ellijay every fall to get apples and make us applesauce. She said that Arkansas Black apples made the best applesauce. However, I recently discovered that Honeycrisp apples are so naturally sweet, if you use them you don’t need to add any extra sugar.
My honeycrisp applesauce recipe just uses Honeycrisp apples, water, and a little cinnamon and nutmeg. Once you try it, it will be hard to go back to applesauce from a jar! If you can’t find Honeycrsip apples, Southern Living has suggestions on other apple varieties that make good applesauce.

Honeycrisp Applesauce
Ingredients
- 3 lbs. Honeycrisp apples (about 8)
- 1 c. water
- 1/4 tsp. cinnamon
- 1/8 tsp. nutmeg
Directions
- Step 1 Peel and core apples and cut into 1/2 to 3/4 cubes.
- Step 2 Add apples, water, cinnamon, and nutmeg to pot. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low and simmer for 1 to 1 1/2 hours, until apples breakdown to desired consistency. (I like to leave mine a little chunky.) Stir occasionally. Add extra water if needed.
- Step 3 Remove from heat and cool. Store in refrigerator.
