Visiting Machu Picchu and other ancient Inca sites

Visiting Machu Picchu has been on my bucket list for a long time. While the Lares Trek was my favorite part of the trip, this doesn’t mean that Machu Picchu wasn’t amazing. It was. Machu Picchu deserves its place on the UNESCO World Heritage List…

Hiking the Andes on the Lares Trek in Peru

This post was supposed to be about Machu Picchu. Machu Picchu has been on my bucket list for years. But the part of my trip that made me fall in love with Peru was hiking the Andes on the Lares Trek. Don’t get me wrong:…

Swinging by Ellijay River
Swinging by the Ellijay River
This spring my mom, my sister and I wanted to spend some quality time together. We decided to head to Ellijay for a weekend in the North Georgia mountains. No weekend in the mountains would be complete without the dogs so finding a dog-friendly place was a must. Fortunately, we found a cozy log cabin on the Ellijay River from Sliding Rock Cabins. They cater to dog owners and our cabin had everything we needed: A fenced in yard & dog treats for the dogs and hammocks, swings, and the river gliding by for the humans. I know most people associate Ellijay with apples and tend to go in the Fall to visit the orchards, but don’t miss spring in the mountains. The mountain laurel and rhododendron by our cabin were in full bloom and absolutely gorgeous!

Amicalola Falls
Amicalola Falls
While we would have been content sitting in the swing relaxing by the river all weekend, we did venture out of our mountain hideaway for some adventures. Amicalola Falls State Park is a short drive from Ellijay and my mom LOVES the falls, so we went there to hike. The West Ridge Falls Access Trail was Mom’s favorite since it has an amazing view of the falls. With the Mountain Laurel in full bloom the Mountain Laurel Loop Trail was my favorite.

We also checked out downtown Ellijay. It has some cute shops and restaurants. If you find yourself near Cantaberry at lunchtime, stop by. Their tomato basil soup is fantastic.

Poole’s BBQ Pig Hill of Fame
You know I love my BBQ, so we stopped by Poole’s BBQ in East Ellijay. They have great BBQ, but I had forgotten how AMAZING their green beans are. If you like old school southern green beans, you need to try theirs. So. Yummy.

If you’ve been to Poole’s you know they restaurant and hill behind it are filled with brightly colored pigs with the names of customers who have stopped by for a visit. We couldn’t resist getting a pig to commemorate our weekend. Perhaps we’ll go back this fall during apple season to see where the pig from our mother/daughter weekend got placed on the Pig Hill of Fame.

Waterfalls & Hiking at Lake Glenville, NC

Let’s face it, 2020 has been a stressful year. Some friends and I decided we needed a break, so we rented a house on Lake Glenville for a long weekend. Lake Glenville is in Western North Carolina near Highlands and Cashiers. As with many mountain…
